Recipes and Rambles
You know what a recipe is, but what's a "ramble?" Well, a ramble is the kind of walk you take when you have no place in particular to go and all the time in the world to get there. Those are Johnny Chapman's favorite kinds of walks!

Baked apple treats and gingerbread were favorites for people in 18th century New England as well as today! Check out some of these treats that inspired moments in the book.

Rambles
Walk in Johnny's footsteps and try to see the world of 1783 Longmeadow. Or - if you can't get to Longmeadow - find a wooded trail, an unpaved road, or even a patch of grass with a tree to sit under and imagine what he noticed, felt, and heard.

In Longmeadow:
Cooley Brook is at Laurel Park . Walk around the large pond in the center to access beautiful trails, foot bridges and the still-babbling Cooley Brook. Can you imagine Johnny filling his water buckets here? Keep you eyes open for an old well off the beaten path.
"The Meadows" aka Fannie Stebbins Wildlife Refuge
is an amazing place to experience nature. Geese, swans, so many ducks, beaver dams, and even a nest of bald eagles. Lovely walking trails as well.
Turner Park is another wonderful place in Longmeadow to experience nature all seasons of the year. There is a large pond and lovely wooded trail to explore.
